Tod Ridgeway, District One [Tod's pages on FreeNewport.com: "Conflict of Interest?", "Ace of Spades" and "Follow the Money: Who Bought Tod?"] Tod Ridgeway, our representative for District One - the peninsula, doesn't really represent anyone that actually lives on the peninsula. This guy accepted almost $60,000 in his re-election campaign, much of it from developers and out-of-towners. Let's be serious now, can you imagine Tod peddling down the boardwalk on an old cruiser, body surfing with you on a Sunday afternoon, or sitting next to you in your favorite bar? Is he really in touch with us, his constituents that live on the peninsula? Maybe that's why dancing is illegal in Newport Beach! It's time for us to introduce ourselves. Steve Rosansky, District Two Steve is the wildcard on the council. He was appointed after the untimely and early departure of Gary Proctor. Apparently the cost of jet fuel was becoming cost prohibitive for Gary. In any event, Steve was almost unanimously voted in by the council, so you can rest assured that he is one of theirs. Don Webb, District Three [Don's page on FreeNewport.com: "Rubberstamp Webb" & "Follow the Money: Untangling the Webb"] Don Webb is a Team player, and doesn't want to rock the boat, so he usually votes with The Big Three. With Webb's nod, they now have effective control over the council. This leaves Heffernan and Nichols on the flanks. Leslie Daigle, District Four The newest wildcard to be appointed to our disfunctional city council, so she's sure to be a pawn. Welcome to FreeNewport.com Leslie! Leslie replaces Gary Adams, the second city council member to leave in the last year. Are we just that good? Steve Bromberg, District Five The jury is still out on Steve Bromberg, our previous mayor. We've all heard his snide remarks from time to time, but every now and then he'll surprise us all, find the middle ground, and save the day. Although he is definitely one of "The Big Three", he may actually be attempting to do the right thing. Could this be true? Only time will tell... Dick Nichols, District Six [Dick's pages on FreeNewport.com: "Slick Dick Nichols" and "Dick Nichols - UNCENSORED!".] The now infamous Dick Nichols. Probably our most memorable representative, Dick has had a bad case of "foot in mouth" disease from time to time. We actually had the opportunity to interview Dick after one of his recent controversies (see link above). There's so much to say about Dick, that we had to give him his own page(s)! John Heffernan, District Seven [John's page on FreeNewport.com: "Follow the Money: I Bought Myself!".] John Heffernan is the one councilman who no one can claim has been effected by campaign contributions. Why - HE ACCEPTED $0.00! Seriously, he spent over $30,000 of his own money to run for city council. Our hats off to him. Unfortunately for John, he and Dick are really out on the flanks. As the only candidates to emerge from the Greenlight party, they are basically two, one-man armies, ineffective in changing the course set by "The Big Three". I invite you to take the time to send them all an e-mail. Don't worry, it's perfectly legal (for now at least!). Invite them out for a drink. Remember, these guys work for us! Let them know your concerns. Better yet, stop by and visit them every 2nd and 4th Tuesday evenings at City Hall (see the "Fight Back" link). |
