Some of our city council members, including some
of those supposedly representing us here in West
Newport, have painted the residents, particularly the renters in West
Newport, as partiers and troublemakers.
Rather than avoid this stigma, we decided to attack
it head on. The staff at the OC Register were
nice enough to provide us with iXPRESS 2002 data, which analyzed their
"Safety Enhancement Zone". From this data, we created the following
charts. Look what it reveals about the residents of West Newport:
Chart 1. Housing. Yes, we are renters...
Chart 2. Marital Status. Yes, we are single...
Chart 3. Age Distribution. Maybe we are a little younger...
Chart 4. Education. Apparently, we are not ignorant...
Chart 5. Income. And it seems that we are relatively wealthy too...
Most cities in this country would be proud to have a group of wealthy, educated, young professionals. But not Newport Beach. We are the ones supporting our local businesses. Most of us pay more in rent than our silver-spooned neighbors pay in mortgage! Maybe when we own their companies they'll think differently. Or maybe we'll just have to take their council seats next election... |
